IN SHAPE ABROAD

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Trips abroad are always fashionable, but you are likely to eat local dishes often in a foreign country, so you must be able to choose the right foods if you want to enjoy your holiday.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Trips abroad are always fashionable, but you are likely to eat local dishes often in a foreign country, so you must be able to choose the right foods if you want to enjoy your holiday.

If you are travelling in a hot country you must be especially careful about dehydration and the risk of contaminated water and food. It is a good idea to choose water-rich foods, such as fruit and vegetables, but they must be cooked or peelable.

In colder countries, foods with good calorie loads are suitable. Food and drink should be eaten hot, whereas alcoholic drinks should be kept to a minimum, as alcohol causes the loss of body heat. In some countries you should be careful about drinking water that is not bottled, as intestinal problems can ruin your holiday. Your diet should include a variety of foods, which should be eaten as snacks and as part of a main meal. You can choose local dishes when abroad, possibly with balanced amounts of protein, carbohydrate and fat.

Drink mineral water at meals and keep beer and wine to a minimum to avoid losing your figure. Between meals you should drink as much as you need, even two or three litres of liquids if you sweat intensely.
